College is HARD is a web sitcom about four guys dealing with college life in ways they probably shouldn’t. It was developed by Chris Iredale, Alex Dayan, Max Resnik, and Anthony Bentrovato: four theater majors at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.
It all started one cold winter night in December 2007, when Chris sat next to Alex in the Murray-Aikens Dining Hall. For lack of better conversation, Chris began telling Alex about the different performance ideas he was developing, one of which was a youtube sitcom. They bounced ideas back and forth and created the premise for a show on college life.
Then came winter break. A month passed. Chris tried to work on the project with a friend at another school, but got nowhere. When they returned to campus, Alex and Chris happened upon each other in the dining hall once again. Call it fate, call it luck, call it whatever you want…but it happened. Together, they talked about the show.
Alex went home that night and wrote the pilot episode of College is HARD in two hours. He invited two friends, Max and Anthony, to be part of the show. The next day, the four men read through the script. It was terrible…horrendous! Bad jokes and bad puns! Together they all edited the script and Alex re-wrote it as episode one: “The Bet”. Alex’s work has since been praised for its plot development and dialogue.
After learning basic camera training and editing skills from the media services department and the college TV station, SkidTV, the crew shot the first episode. Max took the reins as director, ironing out shot angles and directing the cast. His laid-back attitude and acute sense of direction led to a funny, inventive atmosphere on set.
After the shooting was completed, Anthony focused on editing the show. He taught himself Final Cut Pro in under a month. The youtube community has lauded his sense of comedic timing and editing skills.
After five weeks, episode one was finished. The show premiered on the Skidmore campus to a packed auditorium of students and teachers. The saga continues…
